„My wisdom tooth hurts or is causing trouble“

When a wisdom tooth hurts or causes trouble

Wisdom teeth are the last to come through, usually between the ages of 17 and 25, when there is often no longer enough room in the jaw. That is why many stay trapped in the bone or only partly come through. Food collects around such a tooth, the gum becomes inflamed and pain spreads towards the ear or throat. Not every wisdom tooth needs to come out. If it has grown in properly and can be cleaned, it often stays.

Why it usually happens

  • Not enough room, so the wisdom tooth comes through at an angle or only partly
  • Inflamed gum over a wisdom tooth that has half come through
  • Decay on the wisdom tooth or the tooth next to it, because the area is hard to clean
  • The wisdom tooth pressing on the neighbouring tooth

What we can do

  • Calming the inflammation

When the gum around a wisdom tooth is inflamed, we first rinse and clean the area and calm the inflammation. Removal is easier once the swelling has gone down.

  • Wisdom tooth removal

Dr Vuković removes the wisdom tooth under local anaesthetic. If it is in the bone, the gum is opened, the tooth is divided into pieces if needed and taken out, and the wound is stitched.

  • Monitoring

If the wisdom tooth isn't causing problems, has grown in properly and can be cleaned, we leave it and keep an eye on it at regular check-ups.

How it works with us

  1. 01

    X-ray

A panoramic X-ray (OPG) shows the position of the wisdom tooth and how close it is to the nerve in the lower jaw. For more complex cases we also take a 3D scan.

  2. 02

    Talking about risks

Before removal we explain the possible after-effects: swelling, difficulty opening your mouth and, rarely, temporary numbness of the lip or tongue. We also ask about any medicines you take.

  3. 03

    Removal

The anaesthetic takes effect within a few minutes. During removal you feel pressure and pushing, and if anything hurts, we stop and give you more anaesthetic.

    Instructions and stitch removal

You get written instructions and a number you can call. The stitches come out after seven to ten days.

How long it takes

Removal takes up to an hour, and the check-up and stitch removal is one short visit seven to ten days later.

After treatment

For the first two to three days, swelling and pain that eases with painkillers are expected. On the first day don't rinse your mouth hard, don't smoke and don't drink through a straw, so the blood clot isn't dislodged from the wound. Eat soft, lukewarm food. Get in touch if the pain gets worse after the third day, if you have a temperature or if you notice an unpleasant taste from the wound.

What it costs

Removal costs RSD 5,000–15,000. The lower price applies to a wisdom tooth that has fully come through and is removed like an ordinary tooth, and the higher price to one in the bone, when the gum needs to be opened and stitched. A panoramic X-ray is RSD 3,000, and a 3D scan of one jaw RSD 7,500.

Common questions

Do I have to have all four wisdom teeth out?

Not necessarily. We remove the ones that are causing problems or are likely to, and decide about the others after the X-ray.

How many days off work will I need after the removal?

After a simple removal most people are back at work the next day. For a wisdom tooth in the bone, expect two to three days of swelling and softer food.

Can a wisdom tooth be removed while the gum is swollen?

Usually we calm the inflammation first and remove the tooth once the swelling has gone down. That makes the procedure easier and healing smoother.
