„I'm missing one or more teeth“

When one or more teeth are missing

When a tooth is missing, the neighbouring teeth gradually start to tilt into the gap, and the tooth in the opposite jaw starts to move out of its socket. Chewing shifts to the other side. That is why it makes sense to think about replacing a tooth even when the gap doesn't bother you. There are three main options: an implant, a bridge and a denture. Each has pros and cons, and the choice depends on your bone, the condition of the neighbouring teeth, your budget and the time you have.

Why it usually happens

  • The tooth was taken out because of decay or a root canal treatment that didn't work
  • Gum disease that made the tooth loose until it fell out
  • An injury, a fall or a blow
  • A tooth that never came through (missing from birth)

What we can do

  • Implant with a crown

A screw-shaped titanium post is placed in the bone, and once it has healed, a crown goes on top. The neighbouring teeth are not filed down. Before you decide, we take a 3D scan to see whether there is enough bone.

  • Bridge

The two neighbouring teeth are filed down and a bridge is fitted on them that carries the missing tooth. It is ready sooner than an implant, but healthy teeth are reduced, so a bridge is a good choice when the neighbouring teeth need crowns anyway.

  • Denture

When several or all teeth are missing, a denture restores chewing and appearance within a few weeks. Getting used to it takes time and isn't always easy, so we talk about that in advance. A denture can also be secured on a few implants.

How it works with us

  1. 01

    Consultation and 3D scan

The dentist examines the gap and the neighbouring teeth. For an implant we take a CBCT, a three-dimensional scan that shows the height and width of the bone.

  2. 02

    Comparing the options

You get the options side by side, with the number of visits and a price range for each. You don't have to decide on the same day.

  3. 03

    Placement or preparation

Dr Vuković places the implant under local anaesthetic. For a bridge or denture, Dr Ristić prepares the teeth and takes an impression.

  4. 04

    Healing

The implant and bone usually take three to six months to fuse. During that time, if the tooth is in a visible spot, you wear a temporary tooth.

  5. 05

    Final restoration

Finally, we fit the crown, bridge or denture and adjust your bite. After that you come in for regular check-ups.

How long it takes

A bridge is usually ready in two to three visits over two weeks, while an implant with a crown takes three to six months, with three to five visits.

After treatment

After an implant is placed, mild swelling and tenderness for a few days are normal; you get written instructions on eating and cleaning. Clean bridges and crowns on implants with floss or an interdental brush, because food collects underneath them. Get in touch if the swelling increases after the third day, if you have a temperature or if you feel the implant move.

What it costs

An implant with a crown costs RSD 95,000–140,000 per tooth, depending on the implant system. If there isn't enough bone, bone grafting costs RSD 25,000–60,000. A bridge is priced per unit, at the price of a crown: porcelain-fused-to-metal RSD 16,000, zirconia RSD 30,000–38,000. A full denture costs RSD 60,000–80,000.

Common questions

How long does the whole implant process take?

From placement to crown it usually takes three to six months. If bone grafting is needed, it can take longer; you get an exact plan after the 3D scan.

What if I don't have enough bone for an implant?

Bone can often be built up, either in the same procedure or in a separate one. Sometimes a bridge or denture is the simpler option, and we will tell you so openly.

Am I too old for an implant?

Age on its own is usually not an obstacle. Your general health, the medicines you take and the state of your bone matter more, so we discuss this at the consultation.

This text is a general explanation and not a substitute for a check-up. Your dentist will tell you what is best for you after examining you.
