„My teeth are crooked or have gaps“

Straightening crooked and gapped teeth

Crooked teeth are not only about looks. When teeth overlap, they are harder to clean, so decay and gum inflammation develop more easily, and an uneven bite can strain the jaw joint. Straightening teeth is the field of orthodontics. Many adults today choose clear aligners, but fixed braces still handle more complex movements better. Teeth can be straightened at any age, as long as the gums and bone are healthy.

Why it usually happens

  • Inherited traits: a small jaw or large teeth
  • Baby teeth lost early, leaving too little room for the adult teeth
  • Childhood habits, such as thumb-sucking or using a dummy after age three
  • Teeth shifting after a neighbouring tooth has been taken out
  • Teeth that move with age, especially the lower front teeth

What we can do

  • Clear aligners

A series of clear aligners, changed every few weeks, that gradually move your teeth. You take them out to eat and brush, and wear them about 22 hours a day. If they aren't worn enough, they don't work.

  • Fixed braces

Brackets bonded to the teeth and a wire that guides them. The braces don't come out, so the result doesn't depend on remembering to wear them, and they handle more complex movements well. They need more care when brushing.

  • Early check for children

For children from age 7, we check how the jaws are growing and whether the adult teeth will have enough room. Sometimes monitoring is enough; sometimes early treatment makes later straightening easier or shorter.

How it works with us

  1. 01

    Consultation

Dr Nikolić examines your teeth and bite and tells you whether straightening is needed and which options are suitable.

  2. 02

    Records and plan

We take X-rays, photos and impressions of your teeth. For aligners, a movement plan is made that you can look at before you decide.

  3. 03

    Fitting

Fixed braces are bonded in one visit, without drilling the teeth. Aligners come as a set, with an explanation of how to put them in and clean them.

  4. 04

    Check-ups

You come in every six to ten weeks so we can check progress. With fixed braces, that is when we change or adjust the wire.

  5. 05

    Keeping the result

After straightening, teeth tend to move back. That is why you wear a retainer: a thin wire bonded to the inside of the teeth, or a clear aligner worn at night.

How long it takes

Treatment usually takes one to two years, with check-ups every six to ten weeks; the exact time depends on how far the teeth need to move.

After treatment

For the first few days after braces are fitted or you start a new aligner, your teeth will be tender when you bite, so softer food helps. At first the brackets may rub your cheek; we give you protective wax for that. Get in touch if a bracket comes loose, a wire pokes or an aligner cracks, so you don't lose time before your next check-up.

What it costs

Clear aligners cost RSD 280,000–480,000 for the whole treatment, and fixed braces RSD 140,000–190,000 per jaw. The price depends on how complex the movement is and how long it takes. The consultation is RSD 4,500, and after it you get an estimate for your case. For these amounts, ask us about paying in instalments.

Common questions

Am I too old for braces?

There is no upper age limit. Teeth can still be moved after thirty or forty, so for adults healthy gums and bone matter more than age.

When should I bring my child for a first orthodontic check?

We recommend around age seven, when the first adult teeth come through. At that point it is easier to see how the jaws are growing and whether anything should be done early.

Can aligners fix every case?

Not every case. Some complex movements are better handled with fixed braces. After the examination, Dr Nikolić will tell you what is realistic for your teeth.
