Care
Caring for silver jewellery
Silver darkens in contact with air, sweat and cosmetics. It’s normal, and the shine is easy to bring back.
Why silver tarnishes
Silver reacts with sulphur in the air, sweat, perfume and some creams, forming a thin dark layer on the surface. Jewellery left in a drawer darkens faster than jewellery you wear, because skin and friction keep polishing it.
How to store it
- Each piece separately, in a closed pouch or box, so they don’t scratch each other.
- Away from moisture: the bathroom is not a good place for jewellery.
- Take it off before showering, swimming (chlorine and salt), the gym and sleep.
- Put on perfume, hairspray and cream before your jewellery.
How to clean it
- Day to day: wipe it with the soft polishing cloth that comes with your order.
- When it darkens: wash it in lukewarm water with a little mild soap and a soft brush, then dry it well.
- Don’t use toothpaste, baking soda or abrasive cleaners: they scratch silver and remove the protective layer.
Oxidised pieces and stones
Don’t rub the recesses of oxidised (dark) jewellery with the cloth, or you’ll remove the patina that brings out the pattern. Stones, pearls and mother-of-pearl don’t like soap or hot water: just wipe them with a damp cloth.
